Brick Alignment

The "Radialign" laser alignment device insures that refractory is installed perpendicular to the axis of the kiln. The use of the Radialign prevents errors from being made due to manual measurement from distorted or worn away weld seams. This in turn means longer refractory life due to less mechanical stress.

The Problem:

Our customers were becoming increasingly uncomfortable with the old methods for determining radial alignment and were frustrated with the amount of downtime of their kilns due to improperly installed brick. It is critical to install the brick perpendicular to the axis of the kiln. If the bricks are not placed in the proper alignment, the chance for premature brick failure will greatly increase. We have documented cases of the laser being used for the first time inside of a kiln and the laser’s accuracy discovered improperly installed retaining rings; these retaining rings are the foundation for properly installed brick. The radial welds that were being used for reference were found to be out of alignment. It was also discovered that many of the adjacent radial welds had varied from weld to weld. In many kilns, the radial welds have either been ground down with a grinder or have worn down over time. When this is the case, different time consuming methods must be used to ensure radial alignment. With the use of a tape measure and out of tolerance radial welds it is very difficult to expect accuracy and it is typical to have a tolerance build up which can result in brick being installed out of radial alignment. Radial welds will lose their radial accuracy over time due to the thermal dynamics and pure volume of material being extracted through the kiln everyday. It is important to provide the bricking crew with the latest technology to protect the investment of relining the kiln.

The Solution:

The Radialign™ was manufactured by Bricking Solutions because of continuous demand from our customers to design a simple method that would give them an accurate means to ensure their brick was installed radially aligned. The Radialign produces a continuous laser light parallel to the kiln's axis which is intercepted by a rotating penta-prism device. This refracts the laser perpendicular onto the circumference of the kiln shell. This line can be marked at points along the kiln; points which are then used as an exact reference for installation of the refractory. As one of the primary priorities for installing brick, the Radialign laser seems a small investment to ensure radial alignment.

Justification:

  • The purchase of a laser can be justified simply by the cost of lost brick due to improper radial alignment

  • Lost brick also adds up to premature shutdown of the kiln and thousands of dollars in lost production

  • The laser can be used to mark a large section of the kiln in about an hour

  • The laser will precisely locate retaining rings and other high cost specialty refractory products

  • The laser will give the kiln maintenance supervisor instant feedback and quality control

  • The laser ensures that the bricking crew or bricking contractor has maintained proper radial alignment

  • The plant can eliminate the radial alignment debate with the brick supplier if there is an unexpected failure in the brick lining

Features:

  • Comes complete with rechargeable batteries and A/C adapter

  • Easy to follow instruction manual

  • Durable extruded aluminum bodies protect the internal components

  • The Radialign can be assembled and ready for work in less than 30 minutes
